We have never been silent...
While the brave actions of tribal activists rocketed tribal issues into the 21st Century during the Standing Rock protests, the people of the Oceti Sakowin Oyate, whether they might be, have never been utterly silenced. Only Western media and academics may have thought so, while all along our own storytellers, writers, teachers and academics, journalists and more were telling our own stories to each other.
One of the fundamentally important things, in this age of sometimes isolated reservation communities and those who changed location during urban resettlement programs or for economic and educational reasons, is to come together at a common time and place to share new stories and re-tell the old.
The Oak Lake Writers Society is made up of members of all three dialects and branches, Dakota, Lakota and Nakota, and thereby gives an unique and strong witness to the mutual wisdom of the Oceti Sakowin Oyate.
We have worked on several projects over the years, but our two main books are "This Stretch of the River" and "He Sapa Woihanble: Black Hills Dream."
"He Sapa Woihanble" is available through the publisher, Living Justice Press. He Sapa Woihanble is a collection of writings by members of the Oak Lake Writers’ Society, a state-wide organization of Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota writers. In it, the writers express through eloquent prose, poetry, and personal stories their profound spiritual relationships to He Sapa, the land known to many as the Black Hills of South Dakota. They speak of the beauty and power of that land, as well as the painful history of its appropriation by the United States.
The Oak Lake Writer’s Society is an outgrowth of the summer retreats for aspiring tribal writers that have taken place at South Dakota State University’s Oak Lake Field Station since 1993. The primary goal of the Society is to contribute to the strengthening and preservation of Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota cultures through the development of culture-based writings.
“The vision of this book, its dream, its woihanble, is to present Native perspectives on He Sapa, the spiritual center and homeland of the Oceti Sakowin, the Seven Council Fires people. The Oceti Sakowin people, collectively but incorrectly referred to as “Sioux,” are comprised of three major subdivisions: Lakotas, Nakotas, and Dakotas. He Sapa refers to a breathtakingly beautiful ecosystem of pine-covered hills, steep-walled rock canyons, countless caves, and meandering meadows that rise out of the northern Plains like an ocean island. In the Lakota language, “he” means a ridge of mountains, and “sapa” means black. From a distance, the blue and gray haze and the dark dense green colors of the pines and cedars shift subtly and settle deeply into black, thus the name. Today this area is known in English as the Black Hills of South Dakota. . . .

As of Summer 2022, we are pleased to announce the 2nd edition of This Stretch of the River. Dr. Craig Howe (Oglala Lakota) of the Center for American Indians Research and Native Studies (CAIRNS), one of the original editors, reprinted this addition. Books may be purchased through CAIRNS or from the Oak Lake Writers’ Society booth during the Festival of the Book in Brookings, SD, in September.
The writing and work of creating Shaping Survival gave Oak Lake Writers’ Society the foundation to do the work of culture-based writing, creating space for Lakota, Dakota and Nakota writers to speak and share freely of their experiences and their writing. All four women are founding members of the Oak Lake Writers’ Society and have helped shape our other writing and work as well, including seeing us transition to a Native-led, Native-run nonprofit organization.
